Escape room: methods of work and resilience

Working in the arts and culture is oftentimes imagined as an easy, laid-back job filled with creativity and possibilities of expressing oneself, almost like a hobby or good fun without any obligations. And while it is true that this type of work can offer fulfilment, behind a façade of leisure there is serious unseen work – work that, due to precariousness, low wages, and unstable working conditions frequently leads to burnout and fatigue.

This year, STIFF organises a discussion Escape Room: methods of work and resilience, opening up these themes, offering specific insights into workers’ rights and mental health protection in the cultural sector. Moderator Katarina Bošnjak talks with the panellists that have been working in the industry long enough to have tasted some of the dark sides on their own skin. Nataša Antulov, dramaturge and theatre director, co-founder of the inclusive theatre group The Fifth Ensemble; Jelena Androić, active in Citizens to Their City; Luka Čubrić, Cinehill Film Festival coordinator andBorka Ogrizović, a psychotherapist with experience working with cultural workers and problems related to burnout will share their experiences and practical advice on setting professional boundaries, preventing burnout, and enhancing communication with employers – all key questions regarding work in the cultural sector.

The discussion will result in valuable guidelines and strategies of resilience, important to young professionals entering the sector and wishing to better understand how to cope with the challenges of the cultural industry.

As part of the conversation, the eight-minute film “I Haven’t Stopped All Day” by director Klara Berdais will be screened, which questions some of the conditions and methods of working in the independent cultural sector and also seeks the reason and purpose of working in it.

STIFF — Student International Film Festival is supported by Croatian Audiovisual Centre (HAVC), City of Rijeka, Primorje-Gorski Kotar County,  Serbian National Council, and Goethe Institute Zagreb. The festival takes place in Art-kino Croatia.
